In this Healio video, Andrew J. Costandi, MD, MMM, details the Enhanced Recovery After Liver Transplantation protocol at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, which shortened post-transplant ICU stays from 7 to 3 days in pediatric patients.

In addition to establishing the nationwide protocol, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) has become a leader in fast-tracking pediatric liver transplant patients, which involves extubating patients in the operating room as opposed to in the ICU.

“Since the initiation of the enhanced recovery protocol at CHLA in 2019, we were successfully able to fast-track children as young as 5 months and as small as 5 kilos in this pathway and had zero complications with no reintubations related to this protocol,” Costandi, attending physician and director of abdominal transplantation and radiology at CHLA, said. “We have shared [the Enhanced Recovery After Liver Transplantation protocol] with a few children’s hospitals hoping that it will improve the overall experience for the children and their parents as well as shorten the ICU stay to avoid unnecessary complication.”
