VIDEO: Early biliary clearance after surgery may improve outcomes in biliary atresia
Healio spoke with Ahmad Anouti, MD, about a presentation at The Liver Meeting on the prognostic value of reaching normal bilirubin levels after Kasai portoenterostomy in biliary atresia.
According to Anouti, a pediatric resident at UT Southwestern Medical Center, the study showed that early clearance may be a sign of improved transplant-free survival in these patients.

“Moreover, it highlighted how early biliary clearance not only leads to transplant-free survival but also decreases the risk of complications, like splenomegaly, in a significant way,” he said.
