Healio spoke with Ahmad Anouti, MD, a pediatric resident at UT Southwestern Medical Center, about a presentation at The Liver Meeting on how blocking nuclear factor kappa B could correct cellular defects in biliary atresia.

Researchers analyzed cholangiocyte organoids from livers of healthy donors and patients with biliary atresia and found that NF-KB activation in biliary atresia promotes cellular defects and increases susceptibility to viral infection.

“Blocking this pathway can potentially lead to better improvement of the organoids, tighter junctions and decreased risk for biliary atresia overall,” Anouti said.
