In this Healio video exclusive, Imad Absah, MD, explains how an artificial intelligence-based algorithm helped accurately identify pediatric patients with known celiac disease, especially those who had not received adequate follow-up care.

“Celiac disease is one of the most common autoimmune disorders affecting about 1% of the general population,” Absah, a pediatric gastroenterologist at Mayo Clinic Children’s Center and a presenter at NASPGHAN, told Healio. “Follow-up care is mostly dependent on an expert opinion, so there are no clear guidelines for optimum follow-up care for celiac.”

Using a 1998 to 2016 birth cohort, the AI tool reviewed approximately 30,000 charts and accurately found 66 patients with known celiac disease, 70% of whom met Mayo Clinic’s criteria for suboptimal follow-up care.

Not only was the algorithm able to accurately identify these patients, Absah noted, but it also reminded providers that a majority of them had not received proper follow-up care, potentially putting them at risk for long-term complications.

“The next step is to apply this AI algorithm to a bigger cohort in order to find the differences between the patients who were optimally followed-up or had suboptimal follow-up,” he said.
