In a Healio video exclusive, Neena S. Abraham, MD, MS, FACG, discusses the endoscopist’s role as a leader in the “team sport” of endoscopy and how women can set an example by prioritizing their staff’s comfort and well-being.

“One way to take charge and lead in endoscopy is to institute an ergonomic time-out before each case,” Abraham, professor of medicine in the division of gastroenterology and hepatology at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, said. “This time-out allows the entire team to be aware of modifiable factors in endoscopy that can lead to endoscopy-related injuries.”

An ergonomic time-out ensures optimal body positioning and room setup and is one of many proactive strategies endoscopists can implement to reduce endoscopy-related musculoskeletal injuries, which affect women more often than men, she noted.

“Your endoscopic practice does not need to hurt,” Abraham said. “These steps will minimize injury over your career while helping you to lead the team as the boss.”
