In this video, Kaharu Sumino, MD, MPH, spoke about case presentations and panel discussion on asthma relievers from the American Thoracic Society International Conference.

The discussion was part of a larger symposium on asthma relievers.

“The take home for the symposium is we do have multiple options for the reliever either used on its own for milder patients or as part of a [maintenance and reliever therapy] or as an addition to your maintenance therapy,” Sumino, who is a professor of medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, told Healio. “You can also add it on [inhaled corticosteroid/short-acting beta agonist] option as well, so we do have multiple options.”

She added that an additional combination medication will become available later this year, and that clinicians should consider factors including “the cost, which is the choice of the insurance coverage, the patient preference, adherence,” and other factors when making the best treatment decision for a patient.
