Healio spoke with Kaharu Sumino, MD, MPH, to discuss an American Thoracic Society International Conference presentation on asthma reliever options available internationally.

The presentation given by Fernando Holguin, MD, professor of medicine-pulmonary sciences and critical care at University of Colorado School of Medicine, was part of a larger symposium on asthma relievers.

Sumino, who is a professor of medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, explained that in addition to discussing asthma mortality in low- to middle-income countries, Holguin also discussed medication availability in these countries, data on the excessive use of SABAs being linked to poor outcomes and the importance of additional research and awareness.

Sumino further said that the presentation supported “the fact that we should move away from only using SABA and using the anti-inflammatory reliever either with ICS/formoterol or ICS/SABA is probably the way to go for that.”
