Healio spoke with Kaharu Sumino, MD, MPH, about a symposium presentation on asthma relievers from the American Thoracic Society International Conference.

Sumino, who is a professor of medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, explained that the presentation sought to clarify when to use which reliever following confusion stemming from guideline differences between the Global Initiative for Asthma and the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program.

“There’s been a lot of confusion, so our symposium tried to crack that,” she said, “and show the evidence and pros and cons of the practicality of how we should choose which patients to use which reliever therapy [for].”
