In this Healio video exclusive, Nicola A. Hanania, MD, MS, speaks about a CHEST Annual Meeting session in which he took part that was focused on asthma and COPD overlap.

“As we know [with] asthma/COPD overlap, there’s quite a bit of discussion as to how do we define it, but we know about 15% to 20% of patients with COPD have concomitant asthma,” Hanania, professor of medicine and director of the Airways Clinical Research Center at Baylor College of Medicine, told Healio.

One of the challenges in accurately suggesting therapy for these patients is that they are often not included in clinical trials, according to Hanania, who is also the clinical sciences representative for the Baylor College of Medicine Faculty Senate.

“Most asthma trials exclude patients with COPD and smokers, and most COPD studies exclude patients with asthma, so our recommendation is really based on real-life studies and descriptive studies more so than clinical trials,” Hanania said.
