Healio spoke with Kaharu Sumino, MD, MPH, about a presentation from this year’s American Thoracic Society International Conference on global issues in asthma care.

The presentation focused on asthma in low- and middle-income countries, she explained.

“We tend to focus, obviously, on what’s happening in the U.S., and as a practicing clinician that’s really important, but there’s also a global aspect for it,” Sumino, who is a professor of medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, told Healio.

She noted that the presentation included the “very depressing data that 96% of the asthma death happens in the low- to middle-income countries, so it is happening more in the rest of the world than the U.S.”

Sumino also discussed the use of various treatment options throughout the world, barriers to some treatments and more.
