So, awareness is important in AMD because the earlier we catch a disease, the better we are able to preserve vision. So, a patient who is aware of what changes to look for, such as metamorphopsia or distortion in their vision, especially those patients who have intermediate to high risk, dry macular degeneration, may be able to see a retina specialist sooner, and at a time when they have recently converted to wet macular degeneration, and those patients can get treatment before they develop significant scarring or loss of vision due to damage to the photoreceptors. Oftentimes, when there's chronic fluid, when disease has been active for longer, or even bleeding into the macula, this leads to irreversible damage.
