So in large part, AMD is not a preventable disease. However, there are a few risk factors that patients should be aware of. And these include age, smoking, a family history of AMD, and race. AMD is more common in Caucasians. So patients with AMD or family history, a strong family history of AMD should be counseled on smoking cessation if they smoke. Additionally, obesity and cardiovascular disease can also be risk factors. So, leading a heart healthy lifestyle is very important, and patients can modify some of these risk factors, like quitting smoking and improving their cardiovascular health, and also advise those with a strong family history to seek regular ophthalmologic evaluation.
