BOSTON — Patients with hepatitis C virus-related cirrhosis who achieve sustained virologic response remain at risk for cancer, as well as other non-liver-related events such as diabetes, according to an abstract presented at The Liver Meeting.

“We know that hepatitis C has extrahepatic manifestations, and it’s just a reminder that we do need to continue to monitor these individuals even after a cure,” Nancy S. Reau, MD, FAASLD, AGAF, section chief of hepatology and associate director of organ transplantation at Rush University, told Healio in an interview. “If we make that handoff to primary care, we need to make sure that handoff has enough information in it so that these individuals do not have their liver health forgotten.”
