RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. — In a Healio video exclusive, Anjuli Luthra, MD, said when negotiating a contract in a private practice, women in gastroenterology need to focus on all valuable aspects of a practice, not just salary.
“We can really be focused on salary, I’m guilty of that as well, but there are many other valuable components,” Luthra, therapeutic endoscopist at UNC Rex Healthcare, said at the Scrubs and Heels Summit. “When you are looking to negotiate your first or whichever job, [it should] not just be based on the salary.”
Luthra said negotiations should also include the non-compete agreements, termination clauses, having a scribe or medical assistant and “multiple other potentially non-monetary things that are still very valuable to your practice.”
Luthra said non-compete agreements can be negotiable for women in GI, with regards to the distance or mileage of the location, if there are multiple practice sites.
Although female GIs may not want to think about their next potential job after just starting a new one, Luthra said “you should already be looking at your contract in regard to your exit strategy.”
Female GIs need to pay attention to their “terminations without cause” clauses so they can leave the practice without causative issues.
“The timeline for that and the amount of notice you are required to give can be excessive and that is certainly something that you really want to negotiate,” Luthra noted.
