CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In a Healio video exclusive, Eamonn Quigley, MD, reported increased compliance to an orally ingested vibrating capsule predicted positive outcomes among patients with chronic idiopathic constipation.
In an 8 week, randomized, double-blind phase 3 trial, Quigley, a gastroenterology specialist at Houston Methodist, and colleagues evaluated the impact of compliance on the efficacy of the vibrating capsule. Patients with chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) received either orally ingested vibrating capsules (n = 163) or placebo (n = 149).
Results showed those who complied with ingesting the recommended number of capsules (>32 over 8-week period, 5 capsules per week) had a higher rate of complete spontaneous bowel movement response compared with those who ingested less than the recommended dose.
“I think this is more confirmation of the efficacy of this particular technology as it relates to the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation, and very gratifying to see that compliance can translate into efficacy for individual patients,” Quigley said.
