SAN DIEGO — In a Healio video exclusive, study authors Howard P. Monsour, MD, and Carrie Milliard, discuss how genetic risk assessment and testing may help inform patient care and improve health outcomes.

In research presented at Digestive Disease Week 2022, Monsour and colleagues found that implementing a genetic screening program in a rural GI practice led to the identification of 18% of the tested population, or about 1 in 5 patients, with a genetic predisposition for disease that resulted in a change to their health plan.

“Implementing a virtual assistant-driven genetic risk assessment in a GI practice is feasible and valuable,” Monsour, a gastroenterologist at Lake Granbury Medical Center in Lake Granbury, Texas, concluded.
