The Rome Foundation GastroPsych Group conducted a hybrid meeting at Digestive Disease Week in San Diego to review progress over the past year and determine goals for the years to come.
The group was formed in 2018 by gastro-psychologists Laurie Keefer, PhD, director of psychobehavioral research in gastroenterology at Mount Sinai New York, and Sarah Kinsinger, PhD, ABPP, of Loyola University Chicago, as a way to promote the field of gastro-psychology, increase access to providers trained in brain-gut-behavior therapies and facilitate collaboration around the world. The group’s membership has grown to more than 400 professionals on all seven continents.
More than half of our members are early-career professionals within 5 years of training, and programming for them is a priority for the group. Led by Livia Guadagnoli, PhD, postdoctoral researcher at the Laboratory for Brain-Gut Axis Studies in Europe, and Meredith Craven, PhD, MPH, director of gastro-psychology at Stanford University, early-career professionals receive mentorship and support from senior members to create integrated gastro-psychology programs, initiate research collaborations, collaborate on manuscripts or train in the latest assessment and therapeutic brain-gut techniques.
Kinsinger works with Kathryn Tomasino, PhD, assistant professor of medicine specializing in adult gastro-psychology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and Kari Baber, PhD, psychologist in the department of child and adolescent psychology and behavioral science at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, to create clinical training and education in brain-gut-behavior therapies. They have developed a suite of live and on-demand programs approved by the American Psychological Association, along with a series of case conferences in both pediatric and adult gastro-psychology.
Case consultation groups also have been formed in which licensed gastro-psychology professionals present complex cases in a safe, supportive environment. On the horizon is a workshop called “GI Physiology for the Psychologist,” led by Jean Fox, MD, of the Mayo Clinic.
Finally, our newest committee, led by Antonina Mikocka-Walus, PhD, professor of health psychology at Deakin University in Australia, and Lukas Van Oudenhove, MD, PhD, professor of clinical and experimental medicine at KU Leuven in Belgium, established international research collaborations in gastro-psychology.
We are looking forward to another GastroPsych meeting at UEG Week Oct. 8-11, 2022, in Vienna.
