In a Healio Gastroenterology video exclusive, Lt Col Lavanya Viswanathan, MD, MS, FACP, chief of GI at the David Grant Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California, shared her non-traditional path to leadership.

“Leadership is a way to rediscover and perhaps retain the joy of medicine. Leadership, I think, can be an antidote to burnout,” Viswanathan said. “Remember that leadership is about other people, not about yourself. Bet on yourself, take risks, don’t be afraid to self-nominate, remember to seek out mentorship and sponsorship and be a role model for other women and men. Also remember that leadership can bring a lot of joy to the practice of medicine and a sense of purpose.”
