LAS VEGAS — In a Healio Gastroenterology video exclusive, Brian E. Lacy, MD, PhD, FACG, of Mayo Clinic, outlined how to diagnose and treat functional abdominal pain, also known as centrally mediated abdominal pain.
“It’s important for a number of different reasons, one is it’s much more common than we think. In the general population, the prevalence of centrally mediated abdominal pain syndrome is about 1%, but for referrals to gastroenterologist, it’s actually much more common. ... No. 2, chronic pain. Functional abdominal pain has a huge impact on patients in terms of health care utilization and quality of life; there are opportunities for us to treat these patients better,” Lacy said. “Lastly, it’s an important topic for discussion because there’s been a bit of a conundrum of how to diagnose and accurately treat these patients.”
