In this exclusive video, Mahmoud A. Ghannoum, PhD, FAAM, FIDSA, professor from Case Western University, discusses a study looking at the gut microbiome’s health for addressing depression during COVID-19.
He said within 1 month of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was approximately a 25% increase in anti-anxiety prescriptions, antidepressants and medication for insomnia. Further, about 60% of people described having mental health issues.
To combat depression, Ghannoum said patients should use a microbiome-based holistic approach, meaning modifications in diet, probiotics and lifestyle changes including exercise, sleep about 7 to 8 hours and stress reduction.
“These are important because the microbiome really changes based on all of these factors, in addition to the diet,” he said. “That’s why it is very important that we follow a lifestyle that is going to help us bring balance to the microbiome.”
