Food Allergy Research & Education has awarded a $500,000 grant to a research project seeking to find new biomarkers for food allergies, according to an organization press release.
The grant is going to Alexandra Santos, MD, PhD, from King’s College London, for her proposal that will explore new tests based on basophils and mast cells to test for food allergies in patients with inconclusive skin prick tests.
Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) said new tests would help limit the need for food challenge tests, which can result in severe symptoms and unnecessary stress for patients.
“The proposal submitted by Dr. Santos is exceptional in terms of the progress she has made to date and the feasibility of developing these technologies further toward clinical validation, commercialization, and clinic use,” Bruce Roberts, PhD, chief research, innovation and science officer at FARE, said in the release. “Her team has a great track record, and we are confident in this opportunity to improve decision-making tools for care providers and quality of life for food allergy patients.”
FARE awarded the grant in partnership with Janssen.
