Uterine Fibroids Video Perspectives

Healio spoke with experts about the challenges of diagnosing uterine fibroids, surgical and nonsurgical treatment options, racial disparities in the prevalence and management of uterine fibroids and more.

Erica E. Marsh, MD

In these videos, Erica Elizabeth Marsh, MD, MSCI, FACOG, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology and chief of the division of reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the University of Michigan Medical School, discusses:

  • New treatment options for uterine fibroids, including uterine artery embolization and MRI-guided/focused ultrasound;
  • The availability of medical, surgical and radiological treatment options for uterine fibroids, and that as “every patient is unique, every fibroid is unique, and so every patient treatment plan is going to be unique;”
  • Uterine fibroids as a “disease of all women,” that particularly affects women of African descent, who have a greater prevalence of uterine fibroids, are more likely to have multiple fibroids and develop them at a younger age compared with women of European descent;
  • The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the care of patients with uterine fibroids, including delayed care;
  • The need for additional research to understand the causes of racial and ethnic disparities in uterine fibroids.
