Stephanie S. Faubion, MD, MBA, professor and chair of the department of medicine at Mayo Clinic, the Penny and Bill George Director of the Mayo Clinic Center for Women’s Health and medical director of The North American Menopause Society, and Catherine E. Gordon, MD, fellow in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at Brigham and Women's Hospital, spoke with Healio about what women’s health means to them.
In the second video in this series, Maureen Whelihan, MD, FACOG, gynecologist with and president of Elite GYN Care of the Palm Beaches and State Legislative Chair for the American College of Gynecologists District XII chapter noted the role age plays into the care of female patients.
For younger patients, she said gynecologists should speak with these patients not only about STI prevention and birth control options, but also their general health, including diet and exercise habits. While this is still important for older patients, she noted that the focus shifts to discussing medical comorbidities, hormone therapy management, painful sex and vaginal dryness.
In the third video in this series, Gordon discussed caring for both the physical and mental health of patients.
“Our roles as physicians is to optimize someone’s current health, but also to mitigate risks in the future,” she explained.
In this video, Gordon discussed:
- How menstrual changes can be a marker for overall health;
- Why gynecologists can sometimes be the best positioned to optimize and improve the overall health of a patient; and
- The importance of checking on the emotional well-being of patients, particular patients who are newly postpartum.
