Key takeaways:
- Maternal mortality rates are increasing in the U.S. but are decreasing in other developed countries.
- AI could identify high-risk pregnancies earlier, improve ultrasound scanning and enable remote care.
ORLANDO — In this video from the AIMed24 Annual Meeting, Jennifer Luo Law discusses areas where AI may improve maternal health outcomes in the United States.
“In the developed world, maternal mortality is decreasing,” Law, maternal health venture leader at Philips, said. “But in the United States, our maternal mortality rates are increasing over time — same with NICU admissions and infant mortality. The number of high-risk pregnancies is increasing, the number of U.S. counties without any kind of maternity care provider is increasing and there are stark racial disparities.”
To combat these shortcomings, Law said AI could allow physicians to identify high-risk pregnancy complications earlier, improve and simplify ultrasound scanning and enable remote care at home.
“Wearable data can now provide so much information about how that pregnancy is doing in between in-person appointments, and AI can help clinicians understand and interpret that data without being overloaded,” Law said.
