AI has shown potential in health care applications, but there are some factors physicians should understand regarding its regulation, a speaker at the Osteopathic Medical Education Conference explained.
Several efforts have previously been made to oversee AI utilization. Last year, President Joe Biden issued an executive order for HHS to establish an AI task force that will aim to develop policies and frameworks on the responsible use of AI in the health and human services sector.
“AI obviously is very promising — we are looking forward to a lot of innovation to help with patient care and track patient health outcomes,” Amany Hassan, PhD, an associate professor at Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, told Healio. “But with such innovation, there is always a huge concern about privacy, about bias and about liability.”
If the FDA approves a medical device that uses AI, “that does not mean that you are not liable for any data breaches or for bias that may lead to discrimination against certain groups of patients,” according to Hassan.
“This is where we really need to see more being done and more being regulated in terms of laws and legislation,” she said. “The important thing here is that physicians need to be involved.”
