Top in endocrinology: Long-term gestational diabetes risks; evolution of testosterone use

A new study published in JAMA showed an increase in the incidence of gestational diabetes in the United States, from 47.6 per 1,000 live births to 63.5 per 1,000 live births between 2011 and 2019.

According to researchers, gestational diabetes is one of the leading common complications of pregnancy and is associated with an increased risk for type 2 diabetes in mothers and adverse neonatal outcomes and cardiometabolic risk later in life among children. A review of the study was the top story in endocrinology last week.

Another top story was on the increase in testosterone supplementation over the past 20 years. “Once patients are on testosterone, it’s very hard to get them off,” Ronald Tamler, MD, PhD, director of digital health implementation at Mount Sinai Health System and professor of medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, told Healio.
