CHICAGO — In this video, Adrienne Youdim, MD, FACP, discusses the social factors driving the rising prevalence of obesity in the United States.

A history of abuse, stress, mood and sleep can all influence hunger and weight gain, Youdim, an associate professor at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and Cedars Sinai Medical Center, said during a presentation at the ACP Internal Medicine Meeting.

In addition to food choices, behavioral management and weight loss surgery, medication may be useful in treating patients with obesity.

“Medications are an important part of our armamentarium, and as physicians we should not be afraid, and we should actually be promoting the use of medications to help people manage their energy homeostasis,” she said.
