BOSTON — In this video, a speaker at the ACP Internal Medicine Meeting recaps his talk on hot topics and research developments in sleep apnea.

“What I tried to do was bring up some exciting updates we have in the field,” Khalid Ismail, MD, MB, ChB, a pulmonary critical care and sleep physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, said. “For example, when it comes to severity of disease, there is a lot of really good ongoing research now to try to find a better way we define severe obstructive sleep apnea and not just rely on apnea-hypopnea index.”

Ismail also highlighted multiple treatment options, “and that’s perhaps the most exciting part of the talk.”

“It’s not CPAP for everyone with obstructive sleep apnea anymore,” he explained. “We talked about many of the neuromuscular stimulation devices that we have, hypoglossal nerve stimulation as well as awake neuromuscular training that we use.”
