Key takeaways:

  • 3D modeling allows surgeons to visualize morphology and make informed decisions.
  • Use of 3D modeling can be a “powerful tool” for surgeons performing patellofemoral instability surgery.

WAILEA, Hawaii — In this video from Orthopedics Today Hawaii, John P. Fulkerson, MD, discussed the use of 3D modeling to visualize patellofemoral anatomy and aid decision-making when treating patients with patellofemoral instability.

“Simply put, a 3D rendering of a patellofemoral joint — in which you can move the entire knee around, you can take the patella out and look at the trochlea, and you can study the morphology of that joint — is just incredibly helpful in decision-making,” he said. “Consequently, 3D offers an incredibly powerful tool now for us as orthopedic surgeons to evaluate these patients, and that inevitably will lead to better surgery,” Fulkerson added.
