ASGE, Surgical Science collaborate on GI endoscopy simulation-based curricula

ASGE announced a new collaboration with Surgical Science to develop gastrointestinal endoscopy simulation-based training and curricula.

“Simulation-based training provides an opportunity to apply theory and gain experience in endoscopic procedures, giving learners the confidence to manage similar real-life scenarios,” Bret Peterson, MD, president of ASGE, told Healio. “In a simulation facility like ASGE’s Institute for Training and Technology located in suburban Chicago, one can learn and test new technologies and methods, refine knowledge, skills and attitudes in a safe and secure environment.

Traditionally, simulation-based training caters to the physicians in early career stages while this new curricula will focus on training GI fellows and advanced fellows, as well as general and advanced endoscopists, on more complex GI procedures like endoscopic ultrasound and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, the press release noted.

Surgical Science-Simbionix Simulators are already being used for training in basic and advanced lower and upper gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures, which will set the groundwork for enhanced curricula for physicians in more advanced career stages.

“The ultimate goal is to improve patients’ well-being by ensuring the delivery of high quality and maximally safe endoscopic care. As an intervention for training of both fellows and those in practice, simulation-based training can significantly advance clinical skills and serve as a diagnostic tool for analysis of endoscopic workflow and processes,” Petersen added. “ASGE’s goal is to evolve the conventional apprenticeship model by use of simulation-based experience with a structured curriculum to better achieve competence.”
