VIDEO: Expert discusses the merits of in-person vs. virtual patient care

In a Healio video exclusive, Remo Panaccione, MD, of the University of Calgary, discusses the key differences between seeing a patient in-person vs. virtually.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us were forced to deliver care through virtual forces, whether that was telemedicine, over the phone or video visits, and certainly that adaptation made us many of us more comfortable with delivering virtual care,” Panaccione said.

In tandem with research being done on the effectiveness of telemedicine, many modalities of care, such as smartphone apps and wearable devices, have been developed to help mediate the need for accessibility in a time when that was nearly impossible. While embracing some of this new technology is beneficial, the importance of interacting face-to-face with a patient remains a cornerstone of health care.

“One of the more important things is if we're going to deliver virtual care, we need to develop best practices on how to deliver that care efficiently, meaningfully and effectively in the digital care age,” Panaccione concluded.
