Seth A. Gross, MD, FACG, of NYU Langone Health, reported the G-EYE permanently mounted, reusable, reprocessable balloon demonstrated an increased adenoma detection rate compared with the Endocuff Vision single-use disposable attachment.
In a randomized, prospective, multi-center study, 727 patients referred for colorectal cancer screening or surveillance underwent either Endocuff Vision (ECV, Olympus) single-use disposable attachment-assisted colonoscopy or G-EYE (Smart Medical) balloon-assisted colonoscopy (485 patients per group).
According to results, the adenoma detection rate was 9.8% higher among patient who underwent G-EYE compared with ECV. Further, the G-EYE arm also demonstrated an increased detection of advanced adenomas (24% vs. 12%) as well as the number of adenomas detected per patient (1.21 vs. 1.04).
“The G-EYE integrated balloon that recently got FDA approval here in the United States was superior to the Endocuff when looking at mechanical flattening of folds in the colon,” Gross said in a video exclusive with Healio Gastroenterology. “We have to maximize what we’re currently doing which is 6-minute withdrawal times, split-dose bowel prep and then you’re seeing that it’s all about surface area exposure; we should consider incorporating mechanical devices like the G-EYE integrated balloon into daily practice.”
