In this video exclusive, Sabine Hazan, MD, discussed what stool says about an individual’s health, the role of the gut microbiome in overall health and things COVID-19 survivors and long-haulers need to pay attention to.

Hazan, creator of ProgenaBiome and founder of Ventura clinical trials recently wrote a book entitled Let's Talk Sh!t, which detailed gastrointestinal disorders, treatments and future hope for gut-related diseases.

She said it’s important to balance the gut forum and sustain good microbiome health. If the gut is imbalanced, viruses like COVID-19 will penetrate more easily.

“Our immunity is in the gut,” Hazan said. “It is important to understand that foundation. Because when you start with that foundation you realize your bowel movements are very important, quality of stools in important, your GI symptoms are important, any change in the symptoms become something you have to pay attention to.”

Patients with COVID-19 had something is their gut that did not sustain them and did not keep them immune.

“The quality, consistency of the stool makes a big difference,” she said. “If you are regular, you have regular bowel movements and you are healthy, then there’s not much to do. Its when you deviate from that.”

Hazan noted the color and whether stool sinks or not says a lot about someone’s gut microbiome.
