In an exclusive video, Ray Chung, MD, detailed abstracts presented by the American Association for Study of Liver Diseases presented during Digestive Disease Week.
Chung, president of the American Association for Study of Liver Diseases, discussed one noteworthy abstract that reviewed the incidences and outcomes of COVID-19 among liver transplant recipients.
“It has been a subject of great interest to really pin down whether persons who have undergone liver transplantation are at risk for more severe or for more frequent COVID-19,” Chung said. “...Clearly for the vantage point of understanding whether immunosuppressant regimens exert either a beneficial adverse effect on the outcomes of these patients, I think is an open question.”
Another abstract looked at patients with hepatitis C virus infection who have undergone treatment with direct acting antiviral regimens. He noted a reduction of incidences of cirrhosis among these patients.
Chung also discussed a few abstracts that used artificial intelligence. One abstract looked at the use of machine learning that develops scores or predictive models to determine the presence of cirrhosis and correlated it with the severity of liver disease.
