VIDEO: Bowel prep tablet receives FDA approval
In this exclusive video, Douglas K. Rex, MD, from Indiana University, discusses the recent FDA approval of Sutab, a sulphate-based tablet for colonoscopy preparation.
Rex said the tablet form of sodium sulphate gives an alternative to high-volume liquid preps, which often draw complaints from patients.
In two trials, the tablet prep (Sebela Pharmacaueticals) helped more than 90% of patients achieve successful bowel cleansing, and it was well-tolerated.

It is well known that under most circumstances preparing for a colonoscopy can be more daunting than the procedure itself. Drinking copious amounts of laxative is a usual complaint of patients undergoing colonoscopies to the point where many patients avoid colonoscopy because of the bowel preparation. The approval of a tablet prep may be an innovative approach in bowel preparation prior to colonoscopy. I am hopeful it might help increase patient adherence to colon cancer screening.
