Healio Gastroenterology revealed its second annual Disruptive Innovators Awards recipients at the American College of Gastroenterology Annual Scientific Meeting.
One of the seven awards, the Patient Voice award, went to a patient advocate who has helped dismiss the myths regarding inflammatory bowel disease treatment and care as a blogger, speaker and advocate for chronic illnesses and disabilities.
Tina Aswani Omprakash, a patient with ulcerative colitis and advocate, launched her blog Own your Crohn’s and has collaborated with many clinicians and organizations recognized in the field of IBD to help improve the lives of patients living with chronic illnesses.
“When Healio first contacted me as a finalist for this award, I was extremely grateful, extremely thankful as well as speechless because I didn’t know how to process this,” she said to Healio Gastroenterology in an exclusive video. “It’s only been a year and a half since my journey as a patient advocate began and the reception I have received since then has been outstanding but also astonishing.”
Aswani Omprakash thanked the many clinicians who have supported her work as a patient advocate and the many gastroenterology organizations that have helped her and allowed her to share her story and promote patient advocacy. She also thanked her family for their support, as well as the other co-finalists among the Patient Voice category who “have all done amazing work.”
