The American Gastroenterological Association announced the 17 researchers who will receive funding through the AGA Research Foundation Awards program, according to a press release.

The 2020 awards will offer $2.2 million in research funding to support investigators’ work that will enhance the understanding of gastrointestinal and liver conditions and lead to better treatment options for patients with these conditions.

“This year’s selected awardees are committed to transforming the gastroenterology field with their research projects that span the entire digestive tract,” Robert S. Sandler, MD, MPH, AGAF, chair, AGA Research Foundation, said in the release. “We are excited to continue the foundation’s tradition of excellence with the support of many gifted early career researchers and look forward to seeing how their research evolves with this funding.”

According to the release, 71% of the 2020 awardees are early career investigators and about one-third of awardees are performing clinical research. The award program recruits, retains and supports the GI and hepatology researchers. The foundation’s funding provides recipients with protected time to continue research to take it to the next level.
