ASGE elects new president
The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy announced Klaus Mergener, MD, PhD, MBA, as the new president as of May 2, 2020.
According to a press release, Mergener has held many positions in ASGE, including vice chair of the ASGE Foundation board of trustees, councilor on the ASGE governing board, vice president from 2018 to 2019 and president-elect from 2019 to 2020. Additionally, he is an affiliate professor of medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, Washington. Mergener reportedly is active in clinical practice, clinical research, teaching and administration.
Mergener’s priority as president over the next year will be to ensure ASGE’s educational portfolio will continue to evolve to meet the members’ needs, with hands-on courses and networking events. In addition, he will offer customized educational products and opportunities for virtual learning. Along with the ASGE team, he will hold another ASGE summit on artificial intelligence use in gastroenterology to enhance the focus on the needs of independent practitioners, promote conversations with ASGE members and continue ASGE’s alliances and cooperative projects.
Mergener will continue to spearhead ASGE’s COVID-19 response management team that creates guidance documents and educational events on important issues for members.
Mergener will hold the position as ASGE’s president until May 2021.
