MAUI, Hawaii — In this exclusive video from GUILD Conference 2020, Miguel Regueiro, MD, discusses his presentation on the management of intra-abdominal abscesses in patients with Crohn’s disease.

“This is a very common problem that we as gastroenterologists face in our practices and are often challenged to wonder whether we use medication therapy or whether these patients need surgery,” Regueiro said. “This is a multidisciplinary approach where we need to work with our radiologists to drain the abscess but also our surgeons to decide on surgery.”

Size of the abscess also determines whether medication will be successful or if surgery should be encouraged sooner. In the end, Regueiro said only 30% of patients with an abscess can be treated with pharmacologic methods only; 70% will require surgery sooner or later.
