VIDEO: GI psychologists offer holistic approach to IBD care

LAS VEGAS — In this exclusive video from the Crohn’s and Colitis Congress 2019, Megan E. Riehl, PsyD, of Michigan Medicine discusses what GI psychologists can add to a multidisciplinary approach to treating patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

“We talk about the role of [a] psychologist on these multidisciplinary teams as bringing about aspects of care for emotional wellbeing,” she told Healio Gastroenterology and Liver Disease. “This is such an important and critical factor in care for our IBD patients as anxiety and depression can be quite prevalent.”

Riehl said having a GI psychologist on the team in addition to other doctors, pharmacists and dieticians helps the patient feel secure and confident that their health is being considered from several different perspectives.

“Patients just find that when they have multiple options of providers to talk to that they get to experience their care in a very supportive way,” she said.
