VIDEO: Capsule endoscopy can help with ‘unclear’ IBD diagnoses

ORLANDO — In this exclusive video perspective from Advances in IBD 2018, Jesse Green, MD, from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, discusses several topics he presented at the meeting, including mimics of inflammatory bowel disease and capsule endoscopy.

“Video capsule endoscopy has grown in its use, there is recent literature to support its sensitivity and utility in diagnostic yield,” Green told Healio Gastroenterology and Liver Disease. “When the diagnosis is unclear, it can help diagnose inflammatory bowel diseases in certain instances.”

However, Green said its important to be careful with patients who have had a history of obstruction, small bowel stricturing disease.

“Those patients you really need to carefully consider the potential risk of capsule obstruction,” Green said.

Disclosure: Green reports receiving support from Covidien and Medtronic.
