VIDEO: Modernizing IT could lead to less burnout, better patient care

PHILADELPHIA — In this exclusive video perspective from the American College of Gastroenterology Annual Meeting, Arnold Levy, MD, of Modernizing Medicine, underscores the importance of choosing the right IT partner and how it could lead to better outcomes for physicians and patients.

“Physician life in the last 10 years has become increasingly difficult for all of us, and burnout in all fields of medicine has become truly problematic,” he told Healio Gastroenterology and Liver Disease. “In the field of gastroenterology, it’s probably at the 40% level.”

Levy said the most common factors that attribute to burnout are, dealing with bureaucratic tasks, computerization and increasing number of work hours.

He said achieving success involves establishing good values, having good leadership and teambuilding within a practice. However, all these factors can be helped by having the right user-friendly IT tools.

“It’s going to be the tools for analytics that hopefully, will allow you to analyze both the business part of what you do, as well as how well you take care of your patients,” he said. “Having the right IT partnership won’t solve all your problems, but it will go a long way in making things much better.”
