PHILADELPHIA — Starting this weekend, Healio Gastroenterology and Liver Disease will provide live coverage as the exclusive media partner of the American College of Gastroenterology’s 83rd Annual Scientific Meeting.
The conference is led by current ACG President Irving M. Pike, MD, FACG, and features a comprehensive program that highlights the latest clinical information and future trends in gastroenterology, hepatology and endoscopy.
“The quality of science has been very good this year,” Seth A. Gross, MD, FACG, chair of the ACG Educational Affairs Committee, chief of gastroenterology at Tisch Hospital, NYU Langone Medical Center, and associate professor of medicine at NYU School of Medicine, told Healio Gastroenterology and Liver Disease. “In our presidential plenary sessions, we will have a nice diversity of topics covering a spectrum of gastroenterology, hepatology and endoscopy.”
More than 5,000 gastroenterologists are expected to attend the annual meeting and, according to Gross, this year’s meeting exceeded the record number of abstracts presented at last year’s meeting.
New this year
“One of the things we have recognized is that oftentimes [poster presentations] are one of the first opportunities someone actually has to present their work and to get a better level of engagement,” Gross said.
As a result, Gross said that one of the new things that will be done at this year’s meeting is the presentation of an Outstanding Poster Presentation Award.
Each day in each section of the poster abstracts, a senior ACG member will be assigned to assess several poster presentations.
The scoring system will be based on research quality and clinical presentation in terms of transmitting information over a few minutes, according to Gross.
“This gives an opportunity for those individuals who have poster presentations to present and get some immediate feedback, but it also allows us to recognize those that present their information in the most succinct way as the poster viewers walk around,” he said.
Research highlights
Important highlights among this year’s scientific presentations include topics like fatty-liver disease and its relationship with diabetes, how to better detect Barrett’s esophagus, and research in Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, according to Gross.
There will also be research that should garner interest from a non-physician audience, he said.
“Researchers looked at gluten contamination” in gluten-free restaurant foods, he said. “So, I think from a general public point of view, this will be quite interesting.”
