New registry to track bariatric flexible endoscopic suturing procedures

Apollo Endosurgery announced it is launching a registry to track bariatric flexible endoscopic suturing procedures throughout Europe.

The multicenter, longitudinal data repository will track both endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty and gastrojejunal anastomotic revision procedures and collect information on outcomes related to the safety and efficacy of the procedures, according to a press release.

“The European Bariatric Registry for endoscopic suturing is a great opportunity to create a repository of data on endo-bariatric primary and revision procedures coming from the most important centers in the region,” Gontrand Lopez-Nava, MD, director of the bariatric endoscopy unit department at the University Hospital HM Sanchinarro in Madrid said in the press release. “Bariatric endoscopy will play a decisive role in the treatment of obesity for patients looking for non-invasive procedures. Full-thickness endoscopic suturing will drive this paradigm shift.”

The registry will collect data from procedures that use Apollo’s OverStitch endoscopic suturing system performed at eight advanced endo-bariatric centers across Europe. Apollo expects both country-specific and pan-European data will help in the shared decision-making between patients and physicians.

The registry will start collecting information immediately, according to the press release.

“There were hundreds of bariatric procedures performed in Europe in the first quarter using OverStitch to help patients who are in need of medically-relevant weight loss,” Todd Newton, CEO of Apollo said in the press release. “The European Bariatric Registry will be an important future source of highly credible, real-world clinical data to assist European health systems and payors to determine their coverage policies for this emerging category of procedures.”
