Ferring launches ready-to-drink colonoscopy prep

Clenpiq, the first ready-to-drink bowel prep approved by the FDA, is now available by prescription, according to a press release issued by the manufacturer Ferring Pharmaceuticals.

"At Ferring, we have a long-standing commitment to develop and advance therapies in gastroenterology," Paul Navarre, CEO of Ferring said in the press release. "Now with the launch of the first ready-to-drink bowel prep, we are offering physicians and patients an enhanced treatment option and strengthening the foundation of our growing U.S. gastroenterology portfolio."

The oral solution is a cranberry-flavored combination of the stimulant laxative sodium picosulfate, and magnesium oxide and anhydrous citric acid, which forms the osmotic laxative magnesium citrate, according to the press release.

Clenpiq received FDA approval in November 2017 for use in cleansing the colon as preparation for colonoscopy in adults.

"A safe, effective and well-tolerated bowel prep is an important step towards a successful colonoscopy," Jonathan Cohen, MD, clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Health, said in the press release. "Patients now have the option of a ready-to-drink, low volume bowel prep."
