ORLANDO — Despite diverticulitis being viewed as the realm of surgeons or internists, there are new data that gastroenterologists need to understand, according to an expert at World Congress of Gastroenterology at ACG 2017.

“There’s a lot more to know about diverticular disease. It’s actually the single most common finding during screening colonoscopies,” Brennan M.R. Spiegel, MD, MSHS, FACG, director of health services research at Cedars Sinai, said in a video with Healio Gastroenterology and Liver Disease. “Patients have questions about these things.”

Spiegel explained that although current guidelines say 25% of people develop diverticulitis, his latest research showed there is less than 1% chance over a 10-year period. Younger people who have diverticulosis, though, do have a higher risk for developing diverticulitis.

In this video and his talk at the meeting, Spiegel reviews some other aspects of diverticular disease and the latest treatments.
