First Nonprofit Stool Bank Expands Reach, Research
The first nonprofit public stool bank, OpenBiome, has been providing safe access to fecal microbiota transplantation for patients with recurrent Clostridium difficile infection since 2012, from which time it has scaled rapidly.
“At this point, we work with over 700 hospitals in the U.S. in all 50 states, and our last mapping assessment showed that close to 99% of the population is within a 4-hour drive of a provider, and about 97% are within a 2-hour drive of a provider,” Carolyn A. Edelstein, MPA, OpenBiome’s director of policy and communications said.
Healio Gastroenterology staff had the opportunity to speak with the OpenBiome leadership during a visit to the facility last month, which we have documented in an exclusive pictorial feature.
We are also pleased to begin the publication’s third year by welcoming our new chief medical editors, Nancy S. Reau, MD, FAASLD, AGAF, Chief, Section of Hepatology at the Rush University Medical Center, and Edward V. Loftus Jr., MD, AGAF, FACG, FACP, Professor of Medicine and Director of the IBD Interest Group at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Reau and Loftus have been regular contributors to the publication since its launch, and will now play a more prominent editorial role and guide the Peer Perspective Board.
“I’m excited to have an opportunity as Co-Chief Medical Editor to help develop content for a wide diverse audience,” Reau said. “Education has always been an interest of mine, and I’m looking forward to working with the Peer Perspective Board.”
“I am thrilled to be in a role where I can help play a part in getting cutting-edge medical information out to other gastroenterologists,” Loftus added.
“We are pleased that Drs. Reau and Loftus have joined Healio Gastroenterology as Chief Medical Editors, and look forward to them guiding the Peer Perspective Board,” Joan-Marie Stiglich, ELS, Chief Content Officer of SLACK Incorporated, the publisher of Healio Gastroenterology, said. “Their leadership, expertise and vision will ensure that Healio Gastroenterology continues to grow as the independent voice in hepatology and gastroenterology.”
