The Microbiome: Realizing its Greater Impact

One cannot escape the buzz of the microbiome within gastroenterology, but also outside of the specialty. The microbiome is a chance for gastroenterologists to put themselves at the forefront of not only gastrointestinal disease, but whole-body treatment.
“What we didn’t know was the extent to which the microbiome contributed to many of the normal functions of the body. I think that has been the realization: We are not just having to deal with pathogens in the microbiome, but having to look at the microbiome as a healthy part of our being that contributes to our normal physiology,” Robert J. Genco, DDS, PhD, State University of New York distinguished professor and director of the University of Buffalo Microbiome Center, told Healio Gastroenterology. “We have learned how to tame bacteria or how to adjust the flora. We don’t yet know all the answers, but we have a lot of tricks and techniques to modify the microbiome.”
Genco and other experts discuss the impact of the gut microbiota — and microbiota from other sources — on infection, dysbiosis, weight and even psychosis. Read the cover story to become part of the wave of the future with the microbiome.
