VIDEO: Incisionless anastomosis system improves diabetes, reduces weight

SAN DIEGO — In this exclusive video from DDW 2016, Marvin Ryou, MD, from Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, discusses how a dual-path enteral bypass created by a novel incisionless anastomosis system (GI Windows) led to improvements in diabetes and weight loss in a trial of 10 obese patients.

“GI windows utilizes the incisionless anastomosis system, which is premised on self-assembling magnets that are delivered through the conventional endoscope,” Ryou said. “Ultimately this is to treat type 2 diabetes [with] a nonsurgical approach, as well as to treat obesity.”

All procedures were successful and safe, and after 6 months, all patients lost weight and experienced significant reductions in HbA1c and fasting blood glucose.
