SAN DIEGO — In this exclusive video from DDW 2016, Naim Alkhouri, MD, a hepatologist from the Cleveland Clinic, discusses the increasing prevalence and burden of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis-induced cirrhosis in the U.S.
“What we showed in our study is that the prevalence of NASH-cirrhosis in the United States more than doubled between 1999 and 2012, and based on 2010 U.S. census data now we estimate that 400,000 people are living with NASH-cirrhosis in the United States,” Alkhouri said. “We also did further analysis looking at the presence of advanced fibrosis ... and now we estimate that probably 4 million people in the United States have advanced fibrosis related to fatty liver disease.”
